“Volcano is a silicone Passover plate. The use of a flexible silicon sheet as a platform carrying the plates represents an alternative to traditional Judaica. The punching of the sheet relates to the holiday tablecloth on one side and serves as a functional means of embracing the Passover plates on the other hand. This work was produced as a limited series and was exhibited in the Museum of Jewish Design in New York and in the Jewish Museum in San Francisco.”

Product designer Henry Franks about project: “This product is part of a range of ‘dyslexic objects’ I designed in response to my own dyslexic condition. The aim was to improve the objects through the addition of dyslexia, encouraging the user to re-engage with ordinary objects and subject people to products with a higher emotional function. Inversion and flipping of letters and words is common when reading for dyslexics and is one of many reasons why dyslexics have trouble when learning to read. I still have letters such as ‘p’ and ‘b’ (amongst others) which flip when reading and writing.

These three mugs illustrate inversion and as a result are more stable and more balanced in the hand because the handle position being (upside down and) lower down than normal. This gives a more comfortable pour when drinking due to where the centre of gravity is. They are also more stable in general and less likely to be knocked over. The inverted shape also keeps tea and coffee hotter for longer.”

“Only Right Here” is a piece created by Alan Saga, industrial designer from Monterrey, Mexico. The product´s concept lies in the fusion of bullfighting and a kitchenware. It’s derived of a thorough analysis of Mexican and international cultural mores.

Designer Alan Saga about project: ” Since the twelfth century the first bullfights were documented as an act or public spectacle. Today consciousness awakening of people is a fact that fills me with joy, as it is a symptom of an overall global assessment, being partakers of the divine nature, we are a whole. This art-object symbolizes a new era, where there will be an extinction of aggressive activities, being embodied in what once was a cultural feast, and the great evolutionary step on a humanistic level. Finally is not only about bulls, but about any race or being, that every day they demonstrate with facts that they feel, and above all an amazing loyalty, despite of following their instincts.

The art-object works like a knife holder, which has a multifaceted and geometric aesthetic. Made of aluminum casting for 4 knives, those are basic in a chef’s kitchen. The blades rest on anti-bacterial plastic.”

Heifer Pitcher Cute Milk Cup

With its clever double walled glass design, the pitcher reveals its natural side when filled with milk. Probably the first adjective that comes to mind when describing this item is “cute”. Especially if you take its size into consideration: the pitcher is only four inches (ten centimeters) tall, which makes it a jewel to have around the kitchen. On the other hand, it would not hurt if the producers would come up with a larger version of the creative item (meaning a more practical design) as well. But we are certain that children will fall in love with its original appearance, no matter what the liquid inside. The user can totally take advantage of its transparency and color it in various ways- for example, the cup below was filled with a salad dressing, but also works great with sauces and syrups.

Nordurmyrin is a meat cutting and serving board. It draws its name from a neighbourhood in the old east of Reykjavik. Its street names are named after renowned characters in the old icelandic sagas: Landnama, Laxdaela and Njala. These are examples of the street names: Audargata, Gudrunargata, Gunnarsbraut and Skarphedinsgata. When meat is cut on the board the blood juices rush down the streets. It refers to the conflicts that arose in the societies of the second and third generations of Icelandic settlers.
