Working from my studio in Liverpool I create unique artworks on cutting boards. I wanted to find a way to incorporate art into everyday life – paintings on a wall can seem boring to many people. With my boards, food preparation in the kitchen is so much more fun and colorful.

Each board takes several days to complete, with many steps involved in the process. It’s definitely a messy business! The floor in my studio is absolutely COVERED in resin – I always change into my ‘resin shoes’ so that my regular ones don’t get destroyed!

My work is inspired by landscapes that I have seen on my travels – most particularly the frozen landscape of Reykjavik and the swirling rapids of Niagara Falls. Mountain climbing is one of my favorite things to do, so I get a lot of inspiration from the epic views at a mountain’s summit.

I am a self-employed independent artist. It’s definitely hard work – and a lot of work! – to keep your own business ticking over daily, but I love the challenge. I sell my work online and in small independent shops. One of my big goals is for a large retailer to stock my boards – watch this space!

Essentially the most simplified version of a french press, the Newton is effortless because it uses a Type 2 Lever to reduce the amount of effort needed to extract every single bit of goodness from your grounds. This rather fresh looking device sits on any table-top or even wall-mounts, not letting a small or cluttered kitchen stop you from getting your daily fix. The steps are pretty simple too. Start with a nice hot cup, place and press your coffee grounds into the lower chamber of the Newton. Screw the lower chamber into place and pour hot water into the upper chamber before pulling the lever up. Then delight in the hipster routine of pumping the water through the grounds and out the bottom into your toasty hot coffee cup. The entire process is fun, non-electric, and effortless.

The Newton uses high-quality seals, piston design, and a leverage system to give you 8-10 bars of pressure. Depending on how hard you press down on the lever, and how coarse or fine your coffee grounds are, you should be able to perfect the art of making coffee that’s a 100% product of your work. Plus, its unusual wood, black sheet metal, and orange anodized aluminum color combination will definitely add a splash of energy to your kitchens and your mornings!

Design by Hayden Maunsell

The life of a designer turned writer is quite frustrating. The number of times I come across a product and go “Why didn’t I think of that?!” is damn near uncountable, but I guess the joy of sharing innovative designs that fascinate outweighs the jealousy of not being the design’s creator. I love designs that don’t take convention for granted. Solving a problem often means throwing the existing solution, the status quo, out of the window. That’s what SliceX does. Simple, effective, and with practically no expertise or practice required, the SliceX lets you slice small fruits and vegetables in half with one single knife stroke.

Ideal for grapes, cherry tomatoes, berries, nuts, mushrooms (I could go on, really), the Slicex is a slicing board that strays from the conventional flat surface design of cutting boards. It uses a V-shaped channel and a slit to run your knife through, to slice your fruits and veggies right down the center. The items you need to cut align themselves in a straight line, thanks to gravity, and with one single motion, you’ve sliced all your fruits and veggies in half… perfectly down the middle.

The SliceX comprises two flat components that slide into one another in an X-shaped formation. Made out of heavy-duty HDPE (used in most cutting boards), the SliceX is easy on your knives, non-toxic, and dishwasher friendly. The fact that it separates into two flat boards also makes it easy to store in your kitchen. Using the SliceX is, in fact, easier than using most cutting boards. It saves you the trouble of manually cutting each fruit/veggie you have one by one. It also eliminates the need for you to hold down your food as you cut it, making things much safer… and by virtue of its design, it allows you to slice everything exactly down the center, just as any master chef would. The SliceX saves time, energy, and encourages you to prepare your own food through its fun, delightful, OCD-pleasing cutting experience. Yes, I think I’m definitely jealous for not having thought of this before!

Cutlery turns into cover. JOIN is more than simply knife, fork or spoon. It is a decoration for the table. The magic joining mechanism fascinates everybody. But not everybody will manage at once to transform the little sculpture into cutlery. A little skill and a good eye is necessary.

But do not worry – up to now nobody starved when unravelling the magic knot. Many times a meal grew cold because the cutlery itself, made of long life high-tech plastic material, was simply too fascinating. You should book JOIN a place at your table.

Flexita is a food grater that transforms from two to three dimensions. It is easy to use and efficient to clean and store.

Designer Ely Rozenberg created Flexita Grater a nd was the winning entry for the Red Dot Design Award competition. Thin and flat, the Flexita Grater is unique due to the properties of the material from which it is made: harmonic steel. This is a metal that has a ‘memory’ and returns to its original flat shape after bending. In order to use the greater, one bends it gently. While it is held (with its handles) in its bent formation, it takes the shape of a conical, light, and practical tool. When it flattens out again after use, it is possible to clean it easily. The flat, flexible grater can be readily hung up or put in a drawer for storage, taking minimal space.

The handles and thin edge trim are made with polyethylene injected in a silicon mould, and these parts are recyclable. The steel is incredibly thin, at just 0.2 millimetres. The use of harmonic steel makes it possible to save 50% of the materials used for typical graters. The ease of washing the flat shape can also lead to water savings of up to 80% in comparison to typical graters. The minimal weight of the grater and its flat shape allows for efficient transportation.

Rolling pins by Joanne Choueiri, Giulia Cosenza, Povilas Raskevicius

Rollware developed by Joanne Choueiri, Povilas Raskevicius and Giulia Cosenza from Rotterdam’s Piet Zwart Institute. Rollware is a set of laser-cut rolling pins designed as a tool for the production of bread-based edible dishware, which are adorned with customised and useful patterns. The sustainable products merge traditional crafts, tableware production and cooking with digital technology.

Rollware repurposes the typical culinary rolling pin found in kitchens to a human-powered fabrication device. It reintroduces the rolling pin as a multi-functional device for production, while also addressing sustainability in disposable plates, since the baked bread plates can be eaten rather than thrown away.

The laser-cut rolling pins provide two separate functions: imprinting patterns on the dough and cutting the dough to the size of a plate. Four patterns were designed to fit the arrangement and overall styling of various food types, helping the user to arrange and display dishes as needed. Since the user applies the pressure to imprint the patterns, each piece is unique. The second set of pins is designed to cut the dough into one of four plate sizes, giving flexibility depending on the meal.

Rollware plates are edible tableware that plays an active and surprising role in the eating and dining experience. The design and making is a simple production line, each step adds a key element to the final product.
